The idea of a journey has been a key aspect of Gurunathan’s works as he captured his experience of traveling through a landscape and encountering varied sights, sounds, and materials. In his current works, he examines not only the transformation of the self through a journey but also the transformation of the place journeyed to. The life of a place is shaped both by its residents as well as by travelers and immigrants who bring with them their way of life, material culture, and thought processes that continue to linger as traces across time. This aspect forms the inspiration for his present works. His works engage with forms and materials that are rich in history, such as lacquer and weathered wood, to convey the sense of discovery and transformation that accompany a journey. Ultimately, behind these works lies a universal vision that accepts and rejoices the material and cultural differences that people from different places and backgrounds manifest. This expansiveness in thought process, which is also reflected in his imagery, was and is at the core of Gurunathan’s works.
